Greetings,

The attached dress design is for the prom dress contest 2010. I accept the terms and conditions of this contest, and verify that the design is completely original and hand drawn. I have attached two copies, one of which is labelled. The idea behind my design is rather of an ideal storybook dress which can be described with the words magical, elegant and uniquely memorable. When I first started thinking of a prom dress style, I was more attached to the idea of a princess ball gown. As an idealist, I wanted it to resemble a dress out of a fairytale. However, I changed my mind and now prefer the sophisticated mermaid style.

The story behind my change in preference:

One day in my art class, I spontaneously created figure which was originally supposed to be a mermaid, but instead it turned out to be a girl in a mermaid dress.  It was a sketch which I was proud of; I showed it to my friend, who suggested that I wear a mermaid dress to prom. I smiled but didn’t seriously consider the idea until a second friend made the same suggestion after we tried on some prom dresses in local dress shops. Then I realized mermaid dresses can be quite enchanting and flattering.

My designed dress is a mermaid style dress with a sweetheart neckline, a lace-up back, a red bow on the back area, and ruffle layers expanding out from mid-thigh area to the floor. The labelled picture should explain better. As for the colour and material of the dress, I was unsure so I mixed multiple colours. The dress would work well with dark red, grape, turquoise, and/or black. The body of the dress should be grape coloured, with a dark red bow at the back, and red rose broche at the front. The material can be a mixture, as long as it looks and feels good. Overall, I am very fond of my dress design and hope that you too will see what I envisioned.

Sincerely,
Luan Wei.
