The first decision I needed to make about my dress was the color choice. I have noticed a repetition in usually the same color prom dresses and I wanted to break free of that by choosing green, a less common color. The color will stand out amongst the other usual colors. Other colors the dress could be would be maroon or marigold. The straps and lace on the dress are metallic silver (which came out black on my scanner, but they are supposed to be metallic silver) which will compliment the green.

The next decision I made was length, which for me was a no brainer because I always envision floor length gowns to be elegant and modest. Speaking of modest, that is why there are straps. My religious beliefs are to remain modest by covering up my shoulders and that is what I was doing with the straps. My modest portrayal was actually the reason why I submitted an entry. Often times all the dresses that spark my interest and meet my fancy are strapless, and putting a sweater or a shrug over it just takes away from the elegance. Then the ones that meet my standards are usually less modern and less fashionable. It is hard to find a dress that combines modest with hottest.

I decided to combine styles I want in a dress, make it modest, and make it pop all without making it too busy or too simple.  The fabric is made of silk. The first style I put in was a pseudo heart inspired by Project Runway contestant Maya Luz. The silver metallic on the top part is half of a heart which is subtle to avoid being corny. The neck line is uneven, being straight on the left side to draw attention to the heart and curvy on the right side because of the heart shape.

The next style I included was a sparkly silver emblem placed on the right hip bone where the fabric all ruches towards it. Then under that the dress overlaps over itself. Altogether the styles contained on the front of the dress are asymmetrical and unique to create an all together slimming look.

Now the back is where I added my own creation of a style which is a literal twist on lace up backs. I love lace up backs, but I wanted to make my dress different. I made it bend to create a new shape that will be slimming with the lace up outlined by the silver fabric as well as laced up with metallic silver material, as well.

The style of my sleeves is some what of a triangle shape and they meet the modest criteria without saying ‘grandma’s prom dress’.  The definition of the lower half is a slight poof at the hips where the emblem is. This adds volume symmetrically to be figure flattering for hour glass shapes like mine. Also, the line from the heart is made to connect to the position where the skirt overlaps.

I wanted a dress that pops because so often prom dresses end up being so common and typically are always the same colors. I mixed styles that were modern and fashionable to create a new look that I think will be eye catching, but not because it is super sparkly or a lot to look at, but because it hasn’t been done before.
